Reading Passage
In the wild, many animals do something special when winter comes. The weather is very cold, the ground is hard, and food is difficult to find. To stay alive, some animals go into a long sleep. This is called hibernation.
Before winter, animals prepare in different ways. Some eat a lot of food in autumn. This gives them energy to use during the winter. Others collect food and hide it in their homes. They get ready so they can rest safely until spring.
Animals must find a safe place to sleep. Winter is full of danger, so they need protection. They often stay in a quiet hole, a den, or under the ground. These places keep them warm and hidden. By staying quiet, they avoid problems.
Bears are a good example. They look for a deep cave in the forest. Inside the cave, they rest for many weeks. Snow and ice soon cover the land, but the bear stays inside. It does not eat or move much, but it can live because it stored food in its body before winter.
Hedgehogs also hibernate. They roll into a ball and cover themselves with dry leaves. This keeps them warm and safe. During this time, they breathe very slowly and do not wake until the weather changes.
Some animals are very clever. Frogs go under the ground or stay under water. Turtles hide in the mud at the bottom of ponds. Even when the world outside is very cold, they can survive in these places.
When spring comes, the animals wake. They open their eyes and move again. They are very hungry, so they look for food quickly. Soon, they run, climb, and play like before.
Hibernation is a smart way to stay alive. By finding safe places, avoiding danger, and using their clever skills to prepare, animals can live through the hardest season. Then, when the warm days return, they enjoy life in the forest again.
